Testimonials are a sales technique where a previous customer or client writes a positive review of a product or service they purchased. Only positive reviews are ever used as testimonials. They are therefore a poor way to evaluate the product or service.
Testimonials are often used in high pressure sales situations and usually include emotional language.
The reader has no way of verifying the truth of the statements in the testimonial or even the existence of the writer.
Section 133 of the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law, which covers all Occupational Therapists practising in Australia, states:
“A person must not advertise a regulated health service or a business that provides a regulated health service in any way that-
c) Uses testimonials or purported testimonials about the service or business.”
Fines of up to $10,000 may apply if this section is breached.
